An autoclave is a device to sterilize equipment and supplies by subjecting them to high pressure saturated steam at 121 °C or more, typically for 15 to 20 minutes depending on the size of the load and the contents. It was invented by Charles Chamberland in 1879, although a precursor known as the steam digester was created by Denis Papin in 1679. The name comes from Greek auto, ultimately meaning self, and Latin clavis meaning key — a self-locking device.

What is an Autoclave n what s it for if it's not for sterilising?
Q. Ads for autoclaves say they're for sterilising with a * at the end then you read the * n it's says not suitable for sterilising?!?! What's that about? Do they not meet DoH standards?

A. An autoclave was used until very recently to sterilise using a combination of high pressure and high temperature to kill of any bacteria or germs on any equipment. However, Prions, long, protien based infectious agents can survive the process and carry disease (off the top of my head, i know Mad Cow Disease is prion based.) Hence why it's usually no longer used in either the medical field or tattooing. When you go to a tattoo studio, don't forget to ask how the artists sterilise their equipment. The only way to be sure of a top quality quality tattoo studio is that they will use single use, prepackaged needles.

can you just use an ultrasonic cleaner instead of an autoclave to clean a tattoo gun?
Q. i was wondering cause i want to buy a professional tattoo gun i was wondering because an autoclave is so expensive can you just use an ultrasonic cleaner instead? i just want to know a cheaper way to clean the tattoo equipment but be as clean as possible

A. An ultrasonic cleaner will clean but will not kill off the bacteria and germs on the equipment processed by it. Unless you kill off the bacteria and germs, you will spread infections among users and endanger yourself. Probably you will not be able to get or maintain any business license unless you have the tools and equipment to kill off bacteria and germs. Frankly would you want to use a tattoo parlor that did not go through proper disinfection steps? The autoclave is designed to kill off the bacteria and germs and the device is pretty complex, hence the cost.
