The United States Census Bureau (officially Bureau of the Census as defined in Title 13 U.S.C. § 11) is the government agency that is responsible for the United States Census. It also gathers other national demographic and economic data. As part of the United States Department of Commerce, the Census Bureau serves as a leading source of data about America's people and economy. The most visible role of the Census Bureau is to perform the official decennial (every 10 years) count of people living in the USA. One core result is to decide the number of seats each state is allowed in the House of Representatives. The agency director is a political appointee selected by the President of the United States. Q. I recently got a survey in the mail, more than once. The fishy thing is that it does not have my name on it, just my address and instead of my name is says "resident". Is this legitimate? Or is it a scam? or someone trying to get info to steal my indentity? How do I know it is safe to fill it out and send it in. Asked by Brooke - Tue Apr 13 22:53:31 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. The census was started by the founders. You must be young, the census happens every 10 years. If you don't want to fill it out, call the census bureau, they'll send someone to help you with it. Answered by J M - Tue Apr 13 22:57:34 2010 Do you have to answer all the questions from the Census Bureau?
Q. I've gotten Forwards that say it's not Constitutional to have to answer them. Then I heard you can be put in jail if you don't. Asked by Deenie - Tue Feb 16 15:31:34 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. There are a lot of factors at play. The constitution only says that an enumeration will be taken. So technically only a head count per house would be lawful. Personally I think you could easily get away with not providing the other data for the census since they would never really prosecute. If they had to go before a judge they may run into an activist judge who has the power to strike the whole 2010 census as being unconstitutional given its lines of questioning. The federal government always backs down when they know what they are pushing contradicts the constitution.
