An autoclave is a device to sterilize equipment and supplies by subjecting them to high pressure steam at 121° C or more. It was invented by Charles Chamberland in 1879, although a precursor known as the steam digester was created by Denis Papin in 1679.

Types

There are two main types of Autoclaves:

  • Stove top autoclaves actually resemble a culinary pressure cooker. Each unit comes complete with a bolt-down lid and a pressure gauge on the outside. These units require an outside heat source and can be extremely dangerous in untrained hands. They should only be used by experienced professionals.
  • Front loading autoclaves are more widely used for their convenience, but must also be handled with great care. The units are box-shaped and self contained, equipped with a heating unit to turn water into vapor for sterilization. The autoclave's controls allow the operator to set the desired temperature, and determine how long the machine will remain in operation. There is also a gauge to track chamber temperature/pressure.

Larger, oven sized front loading autoclaves are also available for high volume sterilization needs such as in hospitals.

What, exactly, can you sterilize in an autoclave?
Q. I work in the cosmetology and nail industry and the TxCC recently issued a new rule stating that all reusable implements must be placed in an autoclave. I know metal implements, obviously, but are there any other types of materials that can withstand the autoclave? Thanks for your help!

A. What kinds of things do you use? Think about it .. tweezers, pliers , tools.. and glass.. anything that you use that can tolerate a High Heat . I would even try pottery. plastic and rubbers would melt... wood burns... you could probably put stones in it too. Sterilize a pumice after a pedicure hot rocks after a massage .. that kinda thing.

How do I run a proper cycle from start to finish in a TUTTNAUER 2340M AUTOCLAVE?
Q. This is a older 1970 model. I know how to use it but the directions on top say to open the door for the drying cycle and that doesn't make sence to me. Any help on this would be great.

A. That seems a little odd to be sure. Since there isn't any information aside from whats on the top of the unit, I'd suggest contacting them for more info. Their info is listed below.
