Esperanto (help·info) is the most widely spoken constructed international auxiliary language. Its name derives from Doktoro Esperanto, the pseudonym under which L. L. Zamenhof published the first book detailing Esperanto, the Unua Libro, in 1887. The word esperanto means "one who hopes" in the language itself. The language's original name was "La Internacia Lingvo." Zamenhof's goal was to create an easy to learn and politically neutral language that would serve as a universal second language to foster peace and international understanding. Esperanto has approximately one thousand native speakers, i.e. people who learned Esperanto as one of their native languages from their parents. There is controversy over the number of people who are fluent in Esperanto. Estimates range from 10,000 to as high as two million. The users are spread in about 115 countries. This diverse and international community is evidence to most Esperanto speakers that the language is usable by people from all over the world and that it can establish communication between them.

Although no country has adopted the language officially, Esperanto was officially recognized by UNESCO in 1954. Today, Esperanto is employed in world travel, correspondence, cultural exchange, conventions, literature, language instruction, television, movies, and radio broadcasting. The first international Esperanto congress was organized in France, Boulogne-sur-Mer, in 1905. Since then international conferences and meetings have been organized around the world with Esperanto every year. At least one major search engine, Google, offers searching of Esperanto-related websites via an Esperanto portal.

There is evidence that learning Esperanto may provide a good foundation for learning languages in general. Esperanto is also the language of instruction in one university, the Akademio Internacia de la Sciencoj in San Marino.

Do you think Esperanto is just a completely useless language?
Q. I think it's just useless, no normal person that you see on any street of the world would know Esperanto. Hell, they might not even know what it is! Do you think it would just be wasting time learning Esperanto?
Asked by I Love Madonna & Cher - Sun Sep 20 23:43:33 2009 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments

A. I learnt Esperanto 2 years ago and since then have only ever met one person who randomly knows Esperanto! However, I have met hundreds of Esperanto speakers from dozens of countries by attending gatherings/conferences/et c. So far I have used Esperanto to travel to Vietnam, Japan, Czech Rep, and Poland. Next year there is an Esperanto conference in Cuba and I will hopefully be there. These meetings are fantastic because everyone there has made an effort to learn the language and can now talk on an equal level.

Who here know enough about Esperanto in order to know that it is a living language? In ALL respects?
Q. So far, the only people I have met who thinks that Esperanto is a dead language, it doesn't develope, and any of that stuff just don't know about it. The people I know that actually know about Esperanto, they all reject that view. I say, the more you know about the language, the less there is to object to, what do you say?

A. Most people who have a problem with La internacia Lingvo seem to respond to it like it's a threat to them or something. The fact is, its intent is to provide an international language, thus providing an alternative to national languages forcing out the minor languages, and hence it can be viewed as a threat to those languages' dominance that would otherwise benefit from the widespread use of their tongue. During the persecution of Esperanto in the 30's and 40's in Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia, it was viewed as a threat to the leadership, since it provided the common man the ability to communicate with the outside world, which meant new ideas, which meant a dangerous precedence for the leaders. The plethora of information and other… [cont.]

  • Asked about what impresses her most about Esperanto conferences:
    • With Esperanto conferences, it was the level of fluency. I sort of thought it would be like watching a video of "Chapter 1 Dialogue" in a language class, like "Where is the library?" But it was very fluid, like watching someone speak Spanish. So seeing that happen convinced me that it's a real language; it's not people playing dress-up with a different vocabulary.
