Graves (pronounced /ˈɡrɑːv/, with a silent s; from 'gravelly land' in French) is an important subregion of the Bordeaux wine region. Graves is situated on the left bank of the Garonne river, in the upstream part of the region, southeast of the city Bordeaux and stretch over 50 kilometres (31 mi). Graves is the only Bordeaux subregion which is famed for all three of Bordeaux' three main wine types - reds, dry whites and sweet wines - although red wines dominate the total production. Graves AOC is also the name of one Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) which covers most, but not all of the Graves sub-region.

The area encompasses villages including Sauternes, Pessac, Talence, Léognan, Martillac, Saint-Morillon, and Portets.

The name Graves derives from its intensely gravelly soil. The soil is the result glaciers from the Ice Age which also left white quartz deposits that can still be found in the soil of the some of the top wine making estates.

How long can you go with Graves Disease without being treated?
Q. I went to a specialist last week - she diagnosed me with Graves Disease. It makes sense, I have all the symptoms. I am not happy with the office's response rate. The doctor told me I should get the radioiodine this week and no one is calling me back. There is another endo in the area, but they are booked through April. Can I wait that long?

A. You should not. Find another doctor, one who is actually concerned for your health. The first doctor should have at the very least given you a beta blocker. A beta blocker is a temporary, emergency treatment for Grave's disease until the treatment kicks in. You should also have been given an anti thyroid drug. In the US, they give you methimizole. Once you have the methimizole, you don't need radioactive iodine. RAI is not a cure for Grave's disease. It only treats one symptom of Graves disease - the hyperthyroidism. Plus it gives you an additional disease - hypothyroidism. If you don't want this, don't have the radioactive iodine. So see another doctor. Any old GP will do, if they are willing. You don't actually need an endo. As long… [cont.]

What are the symptons of Graves disease in horses?
Q. As every horse owner knows, come spring time, your horse is going to be shedding their extra hair from winter ( I live in the north). Well this year when I went out to brush his extra fur out I noticed a few things: (a) he has places on his body where there is just skin, and barely any hair, (b) the hair on the top of his but is extremely curly/wavey which isn't normal (c) he had A LOT of dandruff too I just need to know if these are symptons of Graves in horses. Thanks! Please be detailed/specific in all answers!

A. Horse Owner's Veterinary Manual, 2nd edition states: "A condition called patchy shedding may occur in the spring. SOme horses shed large patches of hair all at once, producing bare areas 8 to 10 inces in diameter. The skin is perfectly normal. There is no itching, but the condition may be mistaken for a fungus..." They refer to patchy shedding as normal in the spring time and that it takes about 3 weeks to grow back. Skin that is infected is usually visually filled with pus or severe heat when touched. The dandruff can be treated and prevented by a good bath and maybe get some medicated shampoos. These shampoos come in chemical and "natural" formulas. Salicylic Acid is the best treatment if the dandruff is DRY. Benzoyl peroxide is god… [cont.]
