Metropolitan France (French: France métropolitaine or la Métropole, or colloquially l'Hexagone) is the part of France located in Europe, including Corsica. It can also be described as mainland France or as the French mainland and the island of Corsica. By contrast, Overseas France (la France d'outre-mer, or l'Outre-mer, or colloquially les DOM-TOM) is the collective name for the French overseas departments (départements d'outre-mer or DOM), territories (territoires d'outre-mer or TOM), and collectivities (collectivitiés d'outre-mer or COM).

Metropolitan France and overseas France together form what is officially called the French Republic. Metropolitan France accounts for 81.8% of the territory and 95.9% of the population of the French Republic.

The four overseas departments—Martinique, Guadeloupe, Réunion, and French Guiana—have the same political status as metropolitan France's departments. Metropolitan France and these four overseas departments together are sometimes called France entière ("entire France") by the French administration, especially by INSEE, although in reality this France entière does not include the French overseas collectivities and territories which have more autonomy than the overseas departments (read the Origin of the name section below).

In overseas France, a person from metropolitan France is often called a métro, short for métropolitain.

A. Yes, depending on how you define Hispanic. "creole Language Any pidgin language that has become established as the native language of a speech community. A creole usually arises when speakers of one language become economically or politically dominant over speakers of another. A simplified or modified form of the dominant group's language (pidgin), used for communication between the two groups, may eventually become the native language of the less powerful community. Examples include Sea Island Creole (formerly Gullah, derived from English), spoken in South Carolina's Sea Islands; Haitian Creole (derived from French); and Papiamento (derived from Spanish and Portuguese), spoken in Curacao, Aruba, and Bonaire. Do people really smoke more in Europe than they do in the US and Canada?
Q. I am wondering if this is just my perception or whether or not it is actually backed up by facts. I travel to Europe, literally, every month for work. I usually go once or twice. Anyway, it has been my perception for the past 5 years or so that the people there smoke much more than Americans or Canadians. When I go to Spain, the UK, France, Germany, Belgium, etc I am usually, like, the only person who isn't smoking. When I go out to eat with my business partners everyone around us is like chain smoking. It's almost unreal. Great Britain has to be the worst of the countries I go to the most. I mean, it is just disgusting how much people smoke over there. But I am wondering if maybe that is all just my perception. I live in the Washington… [cont.]

A. Yes they really do smoke that much in Europe. It is just what they do and may explain the terrible teeth. That is a myth that only English have bad teeth. Most europeans I see in the usa (Iwork in international travel) and abroad have horrible nicotine stained teeth. Americans have been anti smoking for quite sometime. There is a joke that it is more acceptable to be a coke addict than a smoker in the USA.

Does it surprise you that Normandy (northern France) lies at the same latitudes than Bavaria (southern Germany?
Q. Does it surprise you that Lyon, Clermont Ferrand or Limoges (central France) is at same latitudes than Venice (Italy)? Does it surprise you that the northermost point of France hardly reach the latitude of the middle of Germany? Does it surpise you that southernmost point of metropolitan France is situated at similar latitudes than Puglia (southern Italy)? I asked those question because I spoke about this subject with a English friend, he could'nt believe that most of France was much more at south than Germany. He thought Paris or northern France being lined with Berlin; central France lined with central/south Germany; and though only a little southern strip of France with quite lined with northernmost parts of Italy Italy. He actually… [cont.]

A. No. His vision is surprisingly ignorant, but then he may have opted out of Geography lessons at school, as it is possible to do at thirteen in England. Does it surprise you than New-York is on the same latitude as Madrid? It is a darned sight colder! =P
