Pressure (symbol: P) is the force per unit area applied in a direction perpendicular to the surface of an object. Gauge pressure is the pressure relative to the local atmospheric or ambient pressure.

Definition

Pressure is an effect which occurs when a force is applied on a surface. Pressure is the amount of force acting on a unit area. The symbol of pressure is P.

Formula

Conjugate variables of thermodynamics Pressure Volume (Stress) (Strain) Temperature Entropy Chem. potential Particle no.

Mathematically:

where:

P is the pressure,
F is the normal force,
A is the area.

Pressure is a tensor quantity. Pressure is transmitted to solid boundaries or across arbitrary sections of fluid normal to these boundaries or sections at every point. It is a fundamental parameter in thermodynamics and it is conjugate to volume.

What is the pressure in atmosphere in the cabin if the barometer reading is 688mm Hg?
Q. The pressure outside a jet plane flying at high altitude falls considerably below standard atmospheric pressure. Therefore, The air inside the cabin must be pressurized to protect the passengers. What is the pressure in atmosphere in the cabin if the barometer reading is 688 mm Hg?

What does pressure mean in chemistry? - please help i need few answers to understand?
Q. ok soe i have few ?'s please help 1. What does pressure mean when they say standard pressure? what does it mean? what does the word "pressure" mean in chemical reaction or in atmospheric pressure? 2. Also how does pressure affect enthalpy. When something is at constan pressure, what does that mean? 3. What is entropy and what exactly does it mean?

A. standard pressure is technically 101.3kPa or 1 atmosphrere.. this would mean the pressure you are feeling right now..- basically pressure-in terms of gases- can be changed. think of it like this,, in an unopened bottle of coke, there is a lot of pressure, since its hard to squeeze,, but once you open the cap,, the pressure is decreased adn its easier to squeeze... --enthalpy is basically heat --entropy is like the "randomness" of the system...a gas will have greater entropy than a solid... also natural reactions tend to form products wtih greater entropy and lower enthalpy (this previous statement, might not be true).. --look up more in your text book
