Unemployment benefits are payments made by the state or other authorized bodies to unemployed people. It may be based on a compulsory para-governmental insurance system. Depending on the jurisdiction and the status of the person, those sums may be meager, covering only basic needs (thus a form of basic welfare), or may compensate the lost pay somewhat proportionally to the previous earned salary. They often are part of a larger social security scheme.

Unemployment benefits are generally given only to those registering as unemployed, and often on conditions ensuring that they seek work and do not currently have a job.

In some countries, a significant proportion of unemployment benefits are distributed by trade/labor unions, an arrangement known as the Ghent system.

Argentina

In Argentina, successive administrations have used a variety of passive and active labor market interventions to protect workers against the consequences of economic shocks and the government’s key institutional response to combat the increase in poverty and unemployment created by the crisis was the launch of an active unemployment assistance program called Plan Jefas y Jefes de Hogar Desocupados (Program for Unemployed Heads of Households).

Can I lose unemployment benefits if I work as a consultant?
Q. I live in New York and I am currently unemployed. I am collecting unemployment now, but I wanted to know if I work as a consultant for one or two days, will I lose my unemployment benefits? The consulting job will only last one or two days and then it will be done. A couple people have answered that I would only lose benefits for the day or two that I worked which is fine with me. I just don't want to permanently lose them. Can anyone else verify that?

A. No - you would report the income to unemployment during your weekly certification. Unemployment will adjust your benefit payment for any money you've earned.

How much can I earn in California without losing my unemployment benefits?
Q. I am currently collecting Unemployment benefits. I plan to do some odd jobs, but I won't earn nearly enough to survive on. I'm worried that when I claim this revenue, my unemployment benefits will cease. Is this true?

A. No. If you make $300 a week in unemployment and $100 at an odd job the next week unemployment will be $200. If there is a week you make more than unemployment then that week you won't get a check. You have to tell them you are working the odd jobs but it isn't steady or full time so you will continue with unemployment until the time runs out.
